Benchmark Education is now using GenAI into its grading system, reducing teacher workload and improving student feedback.

Benchmark Education has integrated GenAI into its grading system, reducing teacher workload while improving student feedback. Built on AWS, this AI-driven tool automates the grading of open-ended assignments, allowing educators to focus more on direct student engagement. The AI streamlines assessment by analyzing student responses, generating scores, and providing justifications, all while ensuring that teachers maintain full control over the grading process.

The solution, powered by Amazon Bedrock and SageMaker, employs advanced machine learning to process written responses based on predefined rubric criteria. It identifies patterns in student writing, evaluates coherence, and highlights areas for improvement. Teachers can review AI-generated grades, accept or adjust them, and add personalized feedback. The AI continually refines its accuracy by learning from teacher modifications, making it a dynamic and evolving assessment tool. The ability to analyze responses across different grade levels ensures scalability, eliminating the need for multiple models per grade.

Since its launch, the AI has processed hundreds of thousands of assignments, with over 280,000 AI-generated grades accepted by teachers. Adoption rates have steadily increased, with 73.5% of AI-assigned scores being approved without modification. When adjustments are made, they are typically minor, demonstrating the AI’s reliability. The tool has also helped reduce ungraded responses from 12% to 9%, ensuring students receive timely feedback.

By automating grading, Benchmark Education enhances classroom efficiency, allowing teachers to focus on instruction rather than manual evaluation. The company plans to expand AI grading to Spanish-language assessments and refine rubric-based evaluations for greater precision. This AI-driven approach is reshaping education, providing faster insights and fostering more personalized learning experiences for students.
