Avangrid has launched First Time Right Autopilot, a GenAI tool that helps field technicians diagnose and fix wind turbine issues.
Avangrid, part of the Iberdrola Group, is leveraging GenAI to improve troubleshooting and efficiency in its wind energy operations. The First Time Right Autopilot, developed using Amazon Bedrock, acts as a virtual expert. Guiding technicians through complex repairs with AI-powered instructions. By using voice or text commands on their mobile devices, technicians receive step-by-step solutions. Reducing downtime and improving wind turbine performance.
The AI assistant analyzes issues using Avangrid’s engineering data and operational knowledge. It delivers real-time guidance, including diagnostic insights, repair steps, and instructional videos, enabling technicians to resolve problems without additional expert intervention. The system is designed to continuously improve, becoming more precise as it processes more field data. Initial deployments in Iowa and New York have shown promising results, with plans for fleet-wide expansion by 2025.
Avangrid’s AI-powered solution streamlines operations, enhances workforce productivity, and supports the expansion of renewable energy. “By integrating generative AI, we are empowering our technicians with the tools they need to improve reliability and efficiency,” said CEO Pedro Azagra. With Avangrid planning broader AI adoption, this innovation represents a significant step in modernizing wind energy infrastructure while ensuring a more reliable clean energy supply.
