Itron is embedding GenAI into its Intelligent Edge Operating System to help utilities access and analyze critical data.

Itron is embedding Microsoft’s Copilot GenAI into its Intelligent Edge Operating System (IEOS) to help utilities access and analyze critical data using natural language queries. This integration will simplify complex reporting, enhance operational efficiency, and accelerate decision-making in energy and water management.

IEOS with GenAI will serve as a virtual assistant, allowing utility operators to query extensive datasets and receive actionable insights on electricity, gas, water distribution, and renewable energy resources. AI-powered analytics will improve consumption tracking, detect anomalies, and provide validation rule insights, reducing reliance on data scientists. Built on Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service, the system ensures secure, real-time processing at the grid edge.

The platform will also enable automated reporting, cross-departmental data access, and AI-driven visualizations. Users can generate reports and charts with simple prompts, reducing manual effort and improving accuracy. AI-powered recommendations will help utilities optimize energy distribution, manage infrastructure, and enhance customer engagement through personalized usage insights. With pre-integrated AI functionalities, the system eliminates the need for advanced technical skills, making AI adoption seamless for utility teams.

With 43% of utilities citing AI expertise as a challenge, Itron’s GenAI integration removes barriers to AI adoption. The collaboration with Microsoft positions Itron as a leader in AI-driven utility management, empowering organizations to operate more efficiently, improve sustainability, and enhance service reliability.
