Perplexity upgrades its GenAI search engine and browser, making research, data tasks, and patent discovery faster and simpler.

Perplexity has rolled out a major GenAI upgrade across its platform, enhancing both its Comet Assistant and search engine. The goal: to make information discovery more intuitive, interactive, and context-aware. The startup is using GenAI to tackle two major challenges—handling complex web interactions and simplifying technical research.

The new Comet Assistant, central to Perplexity’s AI-powered browser, now understands multitasking across multiple tabs, manages user permissions intelligently, and interacts smoothly with complex websites. Users can, for example, ask the AI to compile data across spreadsheets or summarize details from several web pages at once. The assistant’s re-engineered architecture allows it to perceive web elements like forms and tables more accurately, enabling hands-free navigation and real-time content synthesis.

Another breakthrough is the AI Patent Search Tool, designed to simplify one of the most time-consuming research processes. Users can now search patents through natural language queries—such as “AI drug discovery patents since 2023”—and instantly receive structured, AI-generated summaries. The tool filters, ranks, and condenses dense patent data, giving researchers and entrepreneurs rapid insight into innovation trends. Available in beta, it provides extended usage and customization for Pro and Max users.

Perplexity’s GenAI capabilities are also extending beyond its own ecosystem. The company has signed a partnership with Snap Inc., integrating its “answer engine” into Snapchat by early 2026. This will let users access credible, real-time insights within the social platform. Together, these GenAI-driven updates signal Perplexity’s push to merge deep search reasoning with practical, everyday use—turning complex digital discovery into a conversational experience.
