Wimbledon debuts Match Chat GenAI assistant for live games, enhancing fan engagement and performance insights.

Wimbledon, in partnership with IBM, has introduced Match Chat, a GenAI powered assistant built on the Watsonx platform and Granite LLM. It answers pre-written prompts or custom questions during live singles matches. The system tackles the challenge of delivering real-time, personalized fan insights—such as break-point records or player performance—in under seconds. It’s the first conversational AI deployed for live tennis at Wimbledon.

The GenAI assistant overcomes data fragmentation and latency. It integrates editorial knowledge and match data to respond instantly. By pulling statistics, momentum, and context, it replaces manual queries and slows response times. Fans get accurate, context-aware answers during play—no wait, no delayed stats sheets, just seamless interaction.

In addition, Wimbledon upgraded its Likelihood to Win prediction tool. Enhanced by Generative AI, it factors in momentum, player stats, and expert inputs in real-time. The tool fuels social conversation by dynamically updating win probabilities as the match evolves. This also meets fan demand for data-driven interaction and fosters deeper match engagement in social channels.

IBM and AELTC reported over 14 million views of AI-powered pages last year. Match Chat’s rollout aims to extend that trend and gather question data to shape future features. AI tools are augmenting existing digital experiences—from automated commentary to personalized recaps—while preserving essential human editorial oversight. This hybrid approach highlights the benefits: speed, precision, and nuanced storytelling powered by GenAI, while maintaining the emotional, human essence of live sport.
