Formula 1 (F1) is using GenAI to streamline troubleshooting during live races, significantly reducing system downtime

Formula 1 (F1) is enhancing its race-day operations with GenAI, drastically reducing the time engineers spend diagnosing and resolving IT issues. By leveraging Amazon Bedrock, F1 has developed an AI-powered root cause analysis (RCA) assistant that automates troubleshooting, enabling faster and more efficient problem-solving across its digital infrastructure.

F1’s IT team previously spent up to three weeks investigating system failures affecting services like F1 TV and real-time telemetry. Now, with the RCA assistant, engineers can diagnose and resolve issues in minutes. The AI-driven system continuously monitors logs, databases, and network health, using natural language processing (NLP) to analyze system anomalies and provide instant recommendations. With responses generated in under 10 seconds, the assistant reduces initial triage time from over a day to just 20 minutes, cutting total resolution time by up to 86%.

Built in collaboration with AWS, the RCA assistant uses Amazon Bedrock Agents and Knowledge Bases for retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), allowing it to pull relevant troubleshooting data in real-time. Amazon S3, AWS Glue, and Apache Spark process and standardize raw logs, ensuring clean, structured inputs for AI analysis. Anthropic’s Claude 3 model enhances the assistant’s ability to generate context-aware, accurate insights while filtering out irrelevant data to optimize performance and reduce computational costs. Integrated with Jira, the AI also automates ticket creation for unresolved issues, ensuring seamless escalation and tracking.

By embedding AI into its race-day operations, F1 is not only accelerating problem resolution but also preventing recurring failures through predictive analysis. The AI-powered assistant optimizes workflows, reduces manual intervention, and allows engineers to focus on innovation. This strategic adoption of GenAI ensures F1 maintains peak operational performance, delivering uninterrupted, high-quality digital experiences for teams, drivers, and fans worldwide.
