Nesta and Renbee use GenAI to develop Installer Pal, a chatbot designed to empower heat pump installers with real-time technical support.
Nesta and Renbee developed an AI-powered tool called Installer Pal to support heat pump installers in the UK. Launched in April 2024 and concluded in December 2024, this chatbot aims to tackle challenges in the heat pump installation sector. The project seeks to increase the adoption of heat pumps in households, which has been limited due to a shortage of confident installers. The partnership arose from feedback revealing that newly trained installers often struggle with technical issues and lack access to essential support materials. By integrating GenAI, the project enhances productivity and improves the quality of installations. Installer Pal provides real-time assistance. Helping installers navigate complex situations effectively.
User testing identified three main use cases for Installer Pal: training reinforcement, on-site assistance, and regulatory compliance. This virtual mentor enables installers to revisit key concepts and build confidence in their abilities. The chatbot offers instant, situational guidance. Allowing users to troubleshoot technical issues and access the latest standards. Such as MCS guidelines, ensuring compliance during installations.
Additionally, Installer Pal significantly improves the installer experience. Tasks that traditionally took up to 30 minutes can now be completed almost instantly. Installers commend the chatbot for validating ideas and clarifying technical concepts. Looking ahead, Renbee plans to enhance Installer Pal with features like form completion assistance and interpreting schematics using vision models.
Altogether, as the project progresses, Renbee aims to improve Installer Pal’s transparency by linking responses to specific document pages and enhancing visual clarity with images. This evolution reflects a commitment to maximizing the impact of GenAI in the heat pump installation industry.
